Volunteer Program
American volunteers form the heart and soul of the School of Peace and Hope. Through their classes and after school programs they form an extremely close bond with local children, offering them the unconditional love, support and guidance that many lack in their own homes. Their friendship and love for the families and children in Horacio Zeballos Gamez is a life-long bond that they carry with them years after their visit to Peru.
The basis of the volunteer work lies in teaching English, Art and Physical Education classes to students at the School of Peace and Hope during the normal school year. These courses offer children new opportunities for creativity and learning that would not otherwise be available to them due to the school’s low economic resources.
During the summer months of January, February and March, volunteers continue their work by hosting a summer school program for local children in Horacio Zeballos Gamez. Here, volunteers host an array of classes and outdoor games so that children have a fun, safe, and educational alternative during their summer vacation. During this program, each child receives a daily nutritional snack such as fruit salad with yogurt or a chicken sandwich. The majority of the children in Horacio Zeballos Gamez suffer from great malnutrition and anemia, so this food is extremely important to their daily development.
