Due to the great distances between towns in the Canyon Region, many children do not attend school, but instead work in the fields harvesting crops.

Most families live off of the food the are able to harvest in their fields. This bag of potatoes must last the family all year long until next year's harvest. The family will put the potatoes on their rooftop for several weeks. The cold canyon temperatures act to freeze-dry the potatoes so they will last all year.

The families dry their corn and then use a stone such as this one to grind it up. It will then be mixed with water and eaten. Most families eat one meal a day, usually consisting of ground corn and water, beans and possibly a potato.
